The Hoxton Neighbourhood Collection

Vibrant cities and the colours they evoke provide inspiration for the The Hoxton x Bauwerk Neighbourhood Collection.

What colour springs to mind when you think of your favourite city? Is it a shade that reminds you of the weather, the buildings, or maybe the signature clothing worn? It's this desire to distil the atmosphere of a neighbourhood in a few colours that is at the heart of our recent colour collaboration. We teamed up with The Hoxton, the international series of hotels with a reputation for celebrating the individuality of each of its locations through interior design. Working with the hotel’s in-house design team, AIME Studios, we’ve created The Hoxton x Bauwerk Neighbourhood Collection, an exclusive line of nine all-natural limewash paints. The collection captures the look and feel of four iconic Hoxton destinations: Berlin, Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Barcelona with palettes inspired by the streets and people around each neighbourhood. From the peachy warmth of Barcelona’s seaside streets in Poblenou to the Twenties decadence of Berlin’s Charlottenburg district and more, each shade has been carefully curated in a nod to the character behind some of Europe’s best-loved city areas.

Creating collaborative colour collections is an interesting twist on the typical creative process for Bauwerk’s Co-Founder Bronwyn Riedel. All of the colours in the Bauwerk palette are created by Bronwyn, typically in a solitary process. Much like how an artist paints, Bronwyn gets inspired by colours - she sees them, feels them, and creates them. But when it comes to these special collections, it's a collaborative affair. Someone else brings the vision, and Bronwyn turns their ideas into a palette of colours, often through many iterations. It's all about finding that sweet spot between what they are looking for, what will resonate with customers and what is worthwhile bringing to market. “That’s what is important for me in a colour collaboration–that I make the colours for you, and that I also try to tap into what you feel about the colours we’re creating,” Bronwyn reflected. “ The best colours are nuanced, and it's the nuance that makes it perfect. For instance, a pink can be anything, but I always try to underpin with umber or something a little bit moody. I trained as a painter, so I come with an artist’s eye to colour. I’m not a technician that comes up with a colour in a laboratory. I come up with a feeling for the colour. I use my instincts a lot in everything I do.”

The sunshine vibes of the Med are captured in a dreamy palette inspired by one of Barcelona's most vibrant seaside nooks. The collection's three colours Casa, Poblenou and House capture The Hoxton Barcelona's cosy yet cultured feel with a nod to the neighbourhood's sun-drenched streets, peachy storefronts and modern architectural zen.

Casa, a dreamy peach-pink shade conjures up the sun-bleached pigments of neighbourhood houses and storefronts around the Hoxton, Poblenou in sunny Barcelona.

Poblenou captures the reinvigorated feel of Hoxton’s Barcelona’s seafront neighbourhood. The area has evolved from factories and mills to contemporary, glass-framed architecture such as the iconic Torre Glòries skyscraper, which reflects the city’s bluebird skies.

House is a soft, neutral grey tone that connects and unifies each of the Neighbourhood collection palettes.

The Hoxton in the heart of Edinburgh's Haymarket district is the muse behind this elegant, pared-back palette. A trio of Moss, Haymarket and House colours pay tribute to the distinctive facades and Georgian stonework of one of Europe's most handsome city locales.

Moss takes inspiration from the organic green patina that weaves its way through the handsome Georgian facades around the Hoxton in Edinburgh’s Haymarket district.

A softly sophisticated hue, Haymarket is designed as a nod to the Regency stonework that was once the crowning glory of the neighbourhood around the Hoxton Edinburgh. A hallmark of the area’s townhouses and picturesque mews, it’s become textural and interesting over time.

This eye-catching palette is all about sea-faring and the power of adventure. It draws inspiration from the Hoxton Lloyd Amsterdam, based in the city’s hip Eastern Docklands district with vivid waterfront views.

With its rich, mellow tone, Koning is a colour that’s all about seafaring adventure; with hints of vintage travel trunks and well-trodden floors. The name Koning means “king” in Dutch, in tribute to the Royal Hollands Lloyd Shipping Company that once ruled the waves in the waterfront Eastern Docklands area around Hoxton Lloyd Amsterdam.

Inspired by the neighbourhood’s spectacular waterfront location and deep-rooted maritime ties, Docklands invokes the calm and depth of the waterways that are the city’s lifeblood.

A palette of high-octane, richly stylised shades that speak to golden-era Berlin. The Hoxton Charlottenburg is based in a city neighbourhood once known for its Roaring Twenties joie de vivre; think cabaret clubs, theatres and ornate cinemas. Feel the moment with the bold shade of Kino (meaning “cinema” in German), a neutral House hue and pinkish Charlottenburg – a play on the area’s iconic rose-hued palace.

Kino, meaning “cinema” in German, presents a boldly stylised aesthetic that harks back to the cultural landscape of the Hoxton Charlottenburg. Once upon a time, this leafy area of West Berlin was the epitome of the Roaring Twenties, packed with cinemas, cabarets and a decadent café culture.

Charlottenburg is a gorgeous reflection of the facades seen throughout the neighbourhood around Hoxton Charlottenburg; as well as the area’s Rococo namesake; the rose-pink Charlottenburg Palace.
