Q. Why is my limewash paint drying so quickly and leaving dry lines?

In some cases, interior surfaces may be too dry—often due to factors like high temperatures, low humidity, or certain sealed or primed surfaces.

When limewash dries too quickly, it can leave behind darker dry lines and become difficult to spread evenly. This can lead to issues such as over-application or lime blooming. In some cases, the brush may even lift off some of the current or previous coat.

While it’s normal for the first coat to feel a little dry or hard to spread, if your second or third coat feels like it's dragging or doesn’t spread well, it’s likely that the surface is too dry.

Troubleshooting to fix or prevent limewash paint drying too quickly and leaving dry lines

Q. How do I fix my limewash finish if it's dried too quickly?

If you've applied only 2–3 coats of limewash paint and suspect the surface was too dry, you can apply an additional thin coat. To help the limewash spread more easily and avoid dry lines, lightly dip your brush into clean water every 2–4 dips into the paint—just enough to break the surface tension. This simple trick improves spreadability and helps prevent over-application or 'lime blooming.'

Keep in mind that with each additional coat, the finish may become more matte and some of the natural texture can be lost. This varies depending on the limewash colour.

If you’ve already applied too many coats or want to maintain maximum texture, it’s best to start fresh:

  • Apply one coat of Bauwerk Prep Coat to reset the surface
  • Follow with two coats of limewash paint, using the water-dipping technique to keep the application smooth and even

Tips to Prevent Limewash Drying Too Quickly

  • Apply in ideal conditions
The best temperature for applying Bauwerk Limewash is between 8°C and 30°C (46°F–86°F). Avoid painting in direct sunlight or overly dry conditions, as this can accelerate drying time and cause visible dry lines.
  • Watch for brush drag
If the brush starts to feel like it’s dragging—especially on your second or third coat—your surface may be too dry. Take this as a sign to adjust your technique.
  • Lightly dip into water
Every 2–4 dips into the limewash, lightly dip your brush into clean water. This helps the paint spread more smoothly and slows down drying, reducing the risk of uneven texture or streaks.
