Colourful Kitchen Ideas: Playful Limewash Inspiration for Walls, Cabinets & Colourful Homes

A colourful kitchen can be joyful without feeling loud. From soft pink limewash walls and earthy terracotta tones to fresh greens, buttery neutrals and fully colour-drenched spaces, colour has the power to turn the kitchen into the most characterful room in the home.

Colourful kitchen ideas for every kind of home

Some kitchens use colour through cabinetry or tiles, allowing the walls to create a calm backdrop. Others make the walls the main feature, using limewash to create depth, softness and a more lived-in feel. Whether you are drawn to playful contrasts, warm earthy colours or a quiet wash of pink, the best colourful kitchens feel personal rather than prescribed.

Kitchen wall colour ideas with limewash

Limewash is especially beautiful in kitchens because it balances the harder materials often found there: stone, tile, metal, timber and cabinetry. Unlike a flat painted surface, limewash gives kitchen walls a soft, mineral texture with subtle tonal movement, making colour feel gentler and more atmospheric.

Playful colour combinations to try

Pink and green kitchens

Pink and green is a natural pairing for a colourful kitchen: fresh, warm and quietly nostalgic. Use green on cabinetry or furniture, then soften the walls with a plaster pink or warm blush limewash.

Terracotta, paprika and warm earthy kitchens

For a kitchen that feels sun-warmed and expressive, choose earthy reds, clay tones, paprika, ochre or terracotta. These colours work especially well with natural timber, stone, brass and handmade tiles.

Soft green kitchens

Green is one of the most versatile kitchen colours. Soft greens can feel calm and garden-like, while deeper greens bring a more grounded, heritage mood. Pair with warm whites, soft pinks or natural wood for a kitchen that feels colourful but balanced.

Colour-drenched kitchens

A colour-drenched kitchen uses one colour generously across walls, ceilings, cabinetry or trim. In limewash, the effect can feel immersive without becoming too heavy, because the surface has natural movement and softness.

Can you use limewash paint in a kitchen?

Yes, limewash paint can be used beautifully in kitchens, especially on walls and ceilings away from heavy grease or constant splashing. Because limewash is breathable and mineral-based, it creates a softer, more natural surface than conventional paint. In practical areas such as behind the hob or around a sink, pair limewashed walls with a splashback in glass, tile or stone to protect the finish while keeping the colour visible.

To minimise marks and prevent unwanted absorption, we generally recommend using a splashback in kitchens. A glass sheet over your limewashed walls is a sleek option that maintains the color and allows for easy redecoration when needed. Alternatively, waterproof materials like tiles or stone work beautifully in splash zones, as seen here with a large splashback crafted from the same material as the countertop.

How to choose a kitchen wall colour

When choosing a kitchen wall colour, begin with the materials already in the room. Timber, stone, tile, metal and cabinetry will all change how a colour feels. A soft pink can warm a white kitchen, a green can connect the room to the garden, and an earthy red can make a simple kitchen feel layered and architectural.

Small kitchens and dark kitchens

Colour does not need a large kitchen. In smaller rooms, a single soft shade can make the space feel more intentional, while a deeper colour can create atmosphere. If the room has little natural light, avoid cold whites and consider warm neutrals, soft yellows, clay tones or gentle pinks.

Walls vs cabinets

If your cabinetry is already colourful, use limewash walls to soften the scheme. If your kitchen is neutral, the walls can become the colour moment. This makes limewash an approachable way to transform a kitchen without replacing cabinetry, tiles or worktops.

Maintaining limewash in kitchens

Away from the splash zones, grease and fats maintaining lime washed walls in kitchens is simple. If your walls are undamaged and just need a fresh coat of colour, you can simply repaint as needed. Because there is no prep required to repaint limewash, this maintenance can be as simple as picking up a limewash brush and giving a quick 15-minute coat of limewash to the wall.

  • light colours can be spot patched
  • darker colours can quickly be painted over, usually from the nearest corner or break. One coat is normally enough
  • If your walls have been repaired, you'll need to make some additional steps to ensure an even coating for your limewash–learn more here.

Light pink is a popular colour choice in kitchens, whether as part of a colourful mix, like the combination of green cabinets and copper counters above, or as a subtle twist on a neutral, as seen below with beige cabinetry.

Can you use limewash paint in a kitchen?

Yes. Limewash has a long history of being used in kitchens, as it has antibacterial properties. For modern homes limepaint can be used on kitchen walls and ceilings, especially away from heavy grease, oil and repeated splashing. For areas behind a hob, sink or food preparation zone, use a splashback in glass, tile or stone to protect the limewashed surface.

What are the best colours for a colourful kitchen?

The best colourful kitchen colours are the ones that suit the light, materials and mood of the room. Soft pinks, earthy reds, warm neutrals, fresh greens and muted yellows all work beautifully with natural materials such as timber, stone, brass and handmade tiles.

How do you make a colourful kitchen feel calm?

Choose colours with warmth and softness rather than high contrast. Limewash is useful because its mineral texture gives colour movement and depth, helping bolder shades feel more natural and lived-in.

What colours go well with green kitchen cabinets?

Green kitchen cabinets pair beautifully with soft pink, warm white, clay, terracotta, muted yellow and natural timber. For a gentle but playful look, pair green cabinetry with a blush or plaster-pink limewash wall.
