Bronwyn Riedel

Co-Founder Bauwerk Colour

Bronwyn Riedel is Co-Founder of Bauwerk Colour and the creator of the Bauwerk Colour palette. For more than two decades, her work has centred on colour: how it is created through pigment, how it responds to light and natural materials, and how it transforms the feeling of a space.

Her expertise lies in understanding colour at a level of nuance that goes beyond surface description. Undertone, depth, warmth, luminosity, mineral movement, pigment behaviour and changing light are central to how she creates and judges colour.

At Bauwerk Colour, Bronwyn has created a palette of thousands of natural limewash colours, each shaped by her understanding of pigments, limewash, surface, light and place. Her work is one of the defining reasons Bauwerk Colour has become known for soft, complex and deeply liveable mineral colours.

About Bronwyn

Colour and pigment

Bronwyn creates colour from an understanding of pigment rather than trend.

Decades of working with lime and natural pigments have given her a highly developed knowledge of how colour behaves within mineral paint: how pigments interact with lime, how undertones emerge, how depth and luminosity are created, and how the smallest adjustment can fundamentally change the finished colour.

Her work depends on both instinct and experience. She understands the particular character of natural powder pigments. Bronwyn recognises when an undertone needs adjusting, when a pigment requires more earth, warmth or luminosity, and when the smallest shift will bring a palette into balance.

This matters especially in limewash. Limewash does not behave like a flat synthetic coating. It adds movement, softness, depth and light interaction. A colour must therefore be created not only for how it appears in the pot or on a card, but for how it will live on a wall, respond to the hand of the applicator and change with the light of the room or facade.

The Bauwerk Colour palette

Bronwyn has shaped the Bauwerk Colour palette into a distinctive spectrum of whites, neutrals, earth tones, muted colours and deeper mineral shades.

The palette is known for its softness, complexity and restraint: sophisticated without being precious, natural without becoming rustic. Behind that apparent simplicity is a precise understanding of colour. Her colours are created for real spaces: homes, rooms, facades, hospitality interiors, commercial spaces and architectural settings where colour must work with light, material, scale and atmosphere.

This depth of colour knowledge continues to guide the evolution of Bauwerk Colour and the way its colours are presented, sampled, named and understood.

Colour, material and product

Bronwyn’s expertise extends beyond creating individual colours.

She has a particular ability to recognise what is compelling within a natural material and translate that quality into a product people want to live with. Together with Andreas Riedel, she helped reimagine traditional limewash for contemporary homes and architecture, retaining the integrity and character of the material while developing a sophisticated and highly usable colour system around it.

Her approach to product is clear: understand what is inherently good, remove what is unnecessary and allow the essential qualities of the material to come forward.

This thinking informs Bauwerk Colour’s colour cards, colour collections, product presentation and selected collaborations where colour and material are fundamental to the idea.

A particular eye

Bronwyn’s work is ultimately defined by her eye.

For Bronwyn, the question is rarely simply: which colour? The deeper question is how the colour will behave.

Nature is both an inspiration and a way of understanding colour. In the natural world, colour is rarely singular or static. It shifts with light, surface, season and its relationship to everything around it.

This way of seeing has deeply influenced Bronwyn’s work. She considers what a pigment will become on the wall, what light will reveal within it, how it will sit within the architecture and how it will make a space feel.

Often, the difference lies in the smallest nuance.

Natural colour, enduring design

Bronwyn and Andreas Riedel founded Bauwerk Colour around the belief that natural materials, environmental responsibility and exceptional colour could belong to the same idea.

Long before limewash became widely recognised within contemporary interiors, they were developing a modern expression of this traditional material: natural, breathable, mineral and deeply connected to colour.

Today, Bronwyn continues to shape Bauwerk Colour’s palette and its approach to colour, creating shades intended not for a season, but to live with architecture, natural materials and changing light over time.

Her work gives Bauwerk colours their particular character: quiet, mineral, nuanced, atmospheric and made for real rooms rather than passing trends.

Selected projects and collaborations

Bronwyn’s personal involvement is reserved for a small number of exceptional projects, products and collaborations where colour is fundamental to the idea.

Her input is most relevant for architect-led, design-led or brand-led projects where colour, material, atmosphere and long-term visual identity need to be considered carefully from the beginning.

This may include significant residences, hospitality and destination projects, considered commercial spaces, facade and interior colour strategies, product or material collections, and selected brand collaborations where colour plays a defining role.

Depending on the project, Bronwyn may contribute to bespoke colour and palette development, pigment and colour direction, the relationship between colour and architectural materials, or the development of a collection with its own distinctive and enduring identity.

This is not a conventional colour consultation service. Bronwyn’s involvement is considered selectively, where her particular eye, deep colour knowledge and understanding of natural materials can make a defining contribution.

Her unique perspective on colour has been featured in podcasts, including the Natalie Walton Podcast, international publications such as Elle Decoration and Est Living, and books including Ateliers of Europe and This is Home.

Bronwyn has also consulted on colour for Aston Martin, The Ennismore Hotel Group, Aesop, The Barbican, and Courtauld Institute.
