Bauwerk Colour has always been shaped by people: by the people who develop our colours, make our paints, photograph our work, design spaces, apply limewash and live with the finished result.
New tools do not change that.
We use artificial intelligence where we believe it can help people research, explore, communicate and create more effectively. Used thoughtfully, AI can expand human creativity rather than curb it. It can help us explore an idea further, imagine something that does not yet exist, make our knowledge easier to access and offer a richer experience to people discovering Bauwerk Colour.
But the judgement remains human.
Everything we publish under the Bauwerk name remains our responsibility, whether AI has played a part in its creation or not.
The spaces created by our customers, architects, designers, painters and collaborators are fundamental to Bauwerk.
Real projects show something an imagined image cannot: how colour, light, material, architecture and individual choices have actually come together in a particular place.
They remain at the heart of our visual world.
Where we show a real project, we present it as a real project. We do not use AI to invent a project, customer, designer, architect or location and present it as something that actually exists.
There are also places we cannot photograph and ideas that have not yet been built.
We may want to explore how limewash could feel in a house in Marrakech, a quiet room in Copenhagen, an old European farmhouse or an architectural space that so far exists only as an idea.
This is where Bauwerk Imagined comes in.
Bauwerk Imagined images are created by our photographers using AI as part of their creative process. They are not the result of AI working alone.
Creating them requires many of the same skills our photographers bring to conventional photography: an understanding of composition, proportion, architecture, light, shadow, colour, materials and atmosphere. The photographer develops the idea, directs the image, makes choices, evaluates the results and refines the work. AI expands the possibilities available to that creative process.
We clearly identify these images as Bauwerk Imagined.
They are invitations to imagine what might be possible. They are not presented as photographs of completed projects.
We use AI selectively where it can improve what we offer our customers and the way we work.
It can help us explore colours and spaces that would otherwise be difficult to visualise. It can assist with research, organisation, translation and the development of information. It can help us make the considerable practical knowledge accumulated within Bauwerk easier to find and understand.
AI also gives our photographers and other creative collaborators another tool with which to experiment.
Our purpose is not to replace human knowledge, judgement or creativity. It is to give those things greater reach.
Most of the project imagery published by Bauwerk is photography of real places.
Where an image is Bauwerk Imagined, we say so.
Where an authentic photograph has been materially altered using AI in a way that could change a viewer's understanding of what was photographed, we disclose that modification.
Digital images, whether photographed or imagined, can never reproduce colour with complete accuracy. Screens, lighting, surroundings and the nature of limewash itself all affect how a colour is perceived. Our imagery should therefore be used for inspiration rather than as a substitute for samples and observing colour in the space where it will be used.
AI can help us organise, research, draft and make information more accessible, but it is not our source of truth.
Technical information about Bauwerk products must be based on our approved product information, testing, documented knowledge and practical experience.
Where accuracy matters, information is checked against appropriate sources. AI-generated statements are not treated as evidence simply because an AI system produced them.
Our aim is to make the knowledge we have built through years of working with limewash easier for people to access and understand without losing the experience and human judgement behind it.
We do not hand responsibility for published content to an AI system.
A person remains responsible for reviewing and approving the information we publish. The greater the consequence of an error, the greater the level of human checking we expect.
This applies particularly to technical guidance, product performance, safety information and other information on which our customers may rely.
We do not use AI to fabricate customer testimonials, reviews, completed projects, professional endorsements, test results or product-performance claims.
We do not present imagined people, places or projects as documentary evidence.
When something is imagined, we want that to be clear. When something is real, we want people to be able to trust that it is real.
We understand the concern that AI may be used simply to replace photographers, artists, writers, designers and other creative people.
That is not how we want to use it.
Bauwerk has always depended on human imagination — from creating a colour to deciding how a room should feel. New technology is valuable to us when it gives creative people additional possibilities, not when it removes them from the process.
Bauwerk Imagined is one example. AI makes spaces possible that could not readily be photographed, while the photographer remains responsible for the creative idea and its visual expression.
The tool has changed. The importance of the person using it has not.
Ultimately, our use of AI has a simple purpose: to help people explore what colour can do.
Some of that experience comes from a centuries-old building painted with limewash and photographed exactly as it exists. Some comes from technical knowledge gained through making and using our paints. And some may begin with an imagined room that has never existed but prompts someone to see a colour, material or space differently.
We believe there is room for all three.
Real materials, real knowledge, real projects and human creativity remain the foundation of Bauwerk Colour. AI gives us another way to explore and share what might be possible.
