BAUWERK Colour Prep Coat is a white water based paint that has threemain functions:

1. It provides a completely uniform matt white background colour
2. it has the right amount of absorbency to allow the limewash paint to anchor itself into and
3. allows for an easy application with enough time to brush out the paint the way you prefer

Prep Coat is a ultra-low VOC water based base paint with a higher than usual amount of absorbing material content. All tools easily wash out with water.

BAUWERK Prep-Coat is not a sealer to block out stains or equalise absorbency differences.

BAUWERK Prep Coat is only used for some internal wall application.

You do need Prep Coat when you want to paint:

• surfaces that have previously been painted with other paints
• non-absorbent materials, such as plywood
• dry wall panels, including gypsum plaster board (must be pre-pared with a Gypsum Primer)

Substrates must be dry as well as free from contamination and adhesion-reducing substances.

Drywall or repaired surfaces must be treated to create a surface of equal absorbency to prevent “ghosting”.

The paint is ready to use and only needs to be stirred thoroughly.
It can be applied by brush, roller or spray gun.
Do not apply at temperatures below +5° C.

Start at the window and brush away from the light.
To avoid visible lines, or a picture framing affect that may appear once limewashed, always paint wet on wet, even when cutting in to keep the finish consistent and even.
If painting the ceiling then paint the ceiling first, followed by the walls. 
To avoid lap marks, blend your vertical strokes with horizontal strokes without loading any additional paint.

Aproximately 140ml per square meter on a smooth substrate (1 liter will cover 6 sqmtrs) per coat. Usually only one coat is required.

At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity the surface is dry to the touch after 3-4 hours.

Application of lime wash paint can commence the next day.
These times are extended at lower temperatures and greater humidity.

If you use the Prep-Coat as a finish (on the ceiling for instance) we recommend to apply two coats. The second coat can be applied over the first coat after 4 – 6 hours.

Clean tools with water after use.

Pro-Tip: Rollers do not need to be washed out if you are planning to use them again the next day or even after a couple of days. Use cling wrap or similar and completely wrap the roller or paint brush tightly around it. As long as there is no air reaching the tool it will not dry out.

Our containers and their lids can be recycled.
Only recycle containers that are completely empty.
Liquid left-over materials should be left open to allow the water content to fully evaporate. The dried left-over materials can be disposed of as construction waste or rubble or as municipal or domestic waste.

In a lot of cases you can limewash paint onto a clean light coloured unblemished surface that has no gloss level to it and skip the Prep Coat for the sample application.

However, if that is not the case, or you will need repaint the wall that you use for your samples, it is recommend to use the Prep-coat even for the samples. The Prep-Coat does intensify some colours, as it provides a nice pure white backdrop the pigmentation of the paint can get hold of.

Prep Coat is not a sealer. It will not hide any repairs or if you install additional drywalls it will not mask the absorbency differences between the dry wall panel and the gap filling material. For that you need to apply a water based dry wall primer before you roll on the Prep-Coat.

Bauwerk Prep Coat is designed for internal use only.

Bauwerk Prep-Coat for lime wash has a VOC content of less than 1gr per litre. The EU limit value for VOC content for this product is 30gr per litre. Many products in the US are classified as low VOC content with a VOC level of 300gr per litre.

By comparison from those values alone our Prep-Coat has a super-super low VOC content. Even so, during the painting process of Prep Coat almost all of the VOC's will be released. Simply airing the room will get rid of that. 

Furthermore, due to the fact that our limewash paint has a very high ph-value any remaining VOC emissions will be eliminated. So you can be assured that after you finished painting you have used a painting system that is safe for a bedroom or a living room application from an air quality perspective.

Limewash Prep coat should be stored in a airtight container, frost free, away from direct sunlight and out of reach from children.

Generally the paint should be used up within 6 months of purchase date.
