Sustainable Developments

Kinland is developing homes sustainably using traditional materials, craft-led spaces and curated details through slow, responsible design.

Bauwerk was built around using traditional techniques and materials for an ecologically-sensitive approach to modern interiors. So it's encouraging to discover new, like-minded companies making similar choices—such as Kinland, a British development and design practice. Their ethos is to create sustainable housing developments full of curated details, using local craftsmen and suppliers through 'slow, responsible design.'

Bristow Mews is their latest small development of three homes, created in collaboration with MW Architects. It includes a modern conversion of a late 1800s Victorian coach house as well as two sustainably constructed new-builds. All three homes have been thoughtfully designed using a soft neutral colour scheme to create clever cohesion. The palette of tactile materials—ply cabinetry, poured concrete floors and limewashed walls—combine harmoniously for a warm, inviting interior. The Nougat limewash paint from Bauwerk is integral to linking the open-plan spaces together.

“With Kinland’s focus being on slow design and sustainable development, it seemed fitting to use a paint which is breathable and non-toxic, and which also promotes the craft led aesthetic of the brand. "

Choosing Bauwerk for the project

One of Kinland's motivating principles is to find sustainable ways of creating new homes–particularly design-led family houses in London. Alex Macaulay, managing director of Kinland, saw a gap in the market for homes that not only exhibit highly skilled craftsmanship but also have a positive impact on the environment. When sourcing materials and fittings it was essential brands fit the brief from both an aesthetic value, but also from an eco-concious standpoint. “Limewash has been becoming more fashionable over the past few years and is tipped to be one of the biggest design trends for the year ahead as consumers align with ethical products. With Kinland’s focus being on slow design and sustainable development, it seemed fitting to use a paint which is breathable and non-toxic, and which also promotes the craft led aesthetic of the brand," Alex explained.

"Bauwerk’s Nougat is a soft colour that really complements the polished concrete floors and exposed materiality throughout the scheme. What I really love about the limewashing application is that it gives a natural, textured feel to the space and brings real warmth to the interiors. With the majority of paints being made from chemicals and plastics, Bauwerk is a more environmentally responsible alternative and provides a beautifully raw and essential finish.”

Picking a Neutral like Nougat

People often jump to white or cream when they are looking for a unifying neutral, but there is a lot more nuance to our neutrals. In fact, we have 48 shades we consider neutral–ranging from warm to cool, grey to tan and even pink and yellows. With that level of choice, there is no right or wrong answer... it's just down to your preference.

With that said, colour is nothing without light. And light is so different depending on where you live, the time of day and even the lightbulbs and windows in your space. As you can see in these homes, Nougat can appear as a pale warm pink colour, a light tan or even a tad peachy. In the description of each limewash colour, we detail the colour's cousins–shades that will be a little more this, or a little less that. Find a selection of shades you like and test them in your space. We offer pre-painted colour cards and handy sample pots in all colours. Then view them at different times of day, with lights on and off to whittle down to your favourite...and then trust your instinct.
