In 2021 we launched a colour collection, Visual Silence, with House of Grey, a London based design studio founded by Louisa Grey. The collaboration resulted in 9  calming colours,  several of which were put to great use in House of Grey's new 'Home of Holism'. This is an innovative new environment created with intention, natural materials, and a circular salutogenic design approach. While it's part home and part workplace, ultimately it's the signature showcase of the House of Grey brand and how they approach not only the aesthetics, but a way of life when they're designing.

"At House of Grey, we have always believed in creating homes that enable a person to decompress and download the day in a nurturing environment. When we came up with the concept of the home as your own personal, daily retreat in 2018 – we wanted to demonstrate that you can build a life that you don’t want to escape from." says Louisa Grey. When faced with finding a new studio space, they quickly realised they would need to design their own creative space and revolutionise the concept of 'the work environment' at the same time. "Our collective aim at House of Grey has been to create a workplace environment that people look forward to entering into each day and then leave the studio feeling inspired and energised at the end of the day, rather than exhausted and ready to go home and get out."

St. Mary's Cathedral

Blending old and new seamlessly inside and out in this historic renovation of a Perth landmark, St. Mary's Cathedral.

When the historic St Mary's Cathedral in the centre of Perth underwent its multi-million dollar renovation, it was very important to blend the old with the new seamlessly. Bauwerk paints were a natural choice, both literally and figuratively! 

We worked with the architects and builders to provide a perfect match to the original stone. While the oldest parts of the building are from 1865, they blend seamlessly with the new extensions and additions. To create the look of stone on the exterior, three coats of Bauwerk limewash was used in colours 'Wheat' and 'Sandalwood'. Bauwerk limewash paint was also used throughout the interior, with two coats of colour 'Eggshell'. No undercoat or sealer was required.

Sarah Ellison x Teranova

Beach club vibes styled by Sarah Ellison for Teranova tiles.

As the former editor of Real Living Magazine, Sarah Ellison is now a well-known product designer and stylist. Sarah collaborated with Sydney-based Teranova to create 'Beach Club' a stunning collection of cement tiles. Taking inspiration from her beachy, coastal lifestyle the designs are full of warm, earthy tones. This palette paired beautifully with our limewash paint in colour 'Marrakesh' which was used as a complementary backdrop. 

Styling

Historic Berlin Apartment

The dynamic play of light on white walls elevates this restoration of a historic Berlin apartment.

This classic apartment nestled in the historic Berlin district of Charlottenburg needed a refresh and the first thing to go were the layers upon layers of old wallpaper and paint. Once the new owners had a fresh slate, they decided on a fresh new approach to white paint to match. 

Following the advice of Bauwerk Colour the walls received a new thin layer of white plaster, followed by a light sanding. The ceiling and mouldings were prepared with a white undercoat/sealer. The new surface then was painted directly with 3 applications of Bauwerk Colour lime wash paint “Chalk”. As the name suggests, the colour is a chalky-white, giving the walls a matte, bone-white look. 

While all white paints are certainly not the same, this is especially true for Bauwerk's white limewash. Our limewash is a natural paint made from minerals and pigments which affect the refraction of light. This means that 'Chalk' (our most popular white) has a dynamic spectrum ranging from white to a slight grey, but it also picks up on the warm hues of the parquetry or nighttime lighting. Additionally, there is an interesting depth coming from the subtle brush marks from the painting process, making it an individual hand finish that cannot be achieved with a paint roller.

Our built heritage requires paint in harmony with traditional materials. Limewash paints were used for millennia to decorate homes inside and out. Bauwerk Colour honours that tradition. We use the same basic materials and refine them with 21st Century technology.

Our lime paints can be painted onto stone, concrete, brick, block, renders and plasters, including clay renders and other low-density materials. You can apply the paint inside or outside, you can paint new or old substrates, dry or damp. The paint will not alter the permeability of the surface of your walls, moisture can freely escape and your wall will keep “breathing”.

All our pigments are totally light fast and UV-stable—we do not use cheap industrial tints or colourants. Enjoy our wide selection of heritage colours suitable for any project!

Middle East Exteriors

Middle Eastern buildings that withstand the harsh and demanding environment, while softly blending into the local landscape.

The harsh Middle Eastern climate is especially demanding for exterior paints. High humidity and strong UV light can create problems for conventional paint causing exteriors to fade or paint to blister and peel. However, these conditions are no problem for Bauwerk Colour limewash paints, they perform without fail for many years.

Limewash is one of the oldest paints, in fact it's thought that it was used in ancient Egypt as well as being used in Mediterranean areas. The recipes have changed over the centuries, but the benefits remain the same. Our limewash paint has been used on private residences, government buildings, mosques and holiday resort across the Middle East, providing a long-lasting finish with colours that blend in with the landscape and light of the region.

Pool Retreat by Mon Palmer

Fresh whitewashed walls allow shadows to become natural works of art in this tropical plunge pool space by Mon Palmer.

Introducing Mon Palmer from garden design company Slightly Garden Obsessed. We are a little obsessed with Mon Palmer. Her use of plants that suit the environment, with simple and modern garden designs, represents our Australian lifestyle. In this outdoor plunge pool space, Mon has used Bauwerk limewash paint in colour Whitewash for a clean and fresh backdrop to the gorgeous turquoise water. Shadows from the foliage and architecture take centre stage popping off of the walls for a natural work of art. 

Bauwerk whitewash is made from limestone and minerals which work in harmony with the building and nature. It does more than just make your walls white – it has many amazing natural properties which make it more beautiful and much better for the environment than other types of paint.

A moody, sensory and sensual space by Not Only White x Joost van der Vecht banishes the stereotypical sterile look of a bathroom.

Bathrooms don't need to look sterile. Bring in some mood with the clever use of simple, eco-friendly materials and finish it with deep nurturing walls. This sensory bathroom was created by dutch bathroom designers, Not Only White, who design and curate bathroom products to create simple pleasures in life. Their collection is inviting to touch, as it should be in a bathroom. "A bathroom is a sensory and sensual space. A space where you feel at ease from the moment you step in," says Marike Andeweg, founder of Not Only White. "To refresh for just a few minutes or fully immerse and lose track of time."

In this multi-functional room, the contemporary basin by dutch designer Joost van der Vecht and egg-shaped tub reward the senses with a tactile soft-touch finish and visually pleasing soft lines. The bold, dark walls limewashed in Slate by Bauwerk give depth and a visual texture that contributes to the sensory feel to create a calming cocoon. 

Our paints work really well in bathrooms due to the natural properties of lime. It's naturally antibacterial because it is highly alkaline, and it can also store and release humidity.

Bek Sheppard Stylist

Contemporary vibes in cool greys and warm earth tones by Australian stylist Bek Sheppard.

Bek Sheppard is a well-known Australian Stylist with a unique eye for simplicity and colour. Her distinctive contemporary mix of clean lines with a calm colour palette combines natural materials with a cool 60’s vibe. From cool grey to warm earth tones her interiors always have a quiet textural depth. 

We especially love the rooms Bek styled with photographer Derek Swalwell. The simple bedroom, lounge area and entry uses a feature wall with skinny timber cladding, smooth-lined wooden Scandi furniture and our colour 'whitewash' for a look that is anything but boring.

Rottnest Island Holiday Resort

Preserving one of Australia's oldest and most beautiful settlements, the Rottnest Island Holiday Resort.

Bauwerk Colour is proud to have been supplying paint to one of Australia’s oldest and most beautiful settlements for over 10 years. We have a long and close relationship with the heritage board and together we are working to save the historic fabric of the unique buildings on Rottnest Island.

“The colour policy currently in place for Rottnest Island has been designed around the lime-based paints provided by Bauwerk. Conservation and preservation of the limestone heritage buildings and structures on Rottnest Island is possible through the regular application of appropriate lime wash and paint. Jardan Richmond Store Collaboration

Australian furniture store Jardan expresses contemporary ideas through quality materials in it's iconic flagship location.

Melbourne is a shopping haven for stylish and unique products created by Australian Designers. The flagship location of the Jardan Furniture Store is a premier destination for anyone looking for an eclectic mix of well-designed interiors. Its iconic cool blue store is painted inside and out with Bauwerk Limewash paint.

We love our collaboration with Jardan, mixing up our paint with our shared environmentally sustainable and focused products. Their stores are less like a traditional furniture showroom and more a representation of their design philosophy taking inspiration from local Australian environments. With the variety of different rooms in the space, they were able to let their wares influence the colour palette, ranging from soft and cool to more adventurous colours like leek and rhubarb.

Haarlem Townhouse

Concrete-look walls are a moody backdrop for the eclectic upcycled decor in this Haarlem Townhouse in Amsterdam.

Set in the leafy seaside suburb of Haarlem, near Amsterdam, this grand Town House was decorated using an eclectic mix of new and old, up-cycled and designer objects and a moody concrete paint colour by Bauwerk Colour applied with gusto and confidence.

This application and styling feels really modern and reminscent of a polished concrete walls, but without the complex application (or weight!). It adds depth and interest but remains simple enough to work well with the various other textures, materials, and furniture.

Feast of Merit

Feast of Merit restaurant uses whitewashed walls and ceilings to unite different materials while retaining texture and history of the building.

Feast of Merit is a Richmond Melbourne restaurant, with a unique space full of texture and character due to its preserved beams and exposed brick walls. Elle Critchley Design were responsible for the transformation, so we asked Elle what was important to her when choosing paint for this commercial project.

"What I like about Bauwerk is that the depth, texture and tones are effortlessly perfect for so many of our residential and hospitality projects. For hospitality venues to be successful, and remain successful, the dining experience needs to extend well past the plate and consider the full sensory experience. The inherent depth, texture and tonal variety of Bauwerk lime washes create a completely different feel throughout a space naturally."

Our limewash paints very quickly transform brick and wood with control over the desired outcome. From one-coat rubbed back to allow hints of the original material to peek through, to 3 coats for opaque coverage. No sealer or undercoat is required. Our whites are made from clay, lime and pigments, giving a flat chalky appearance that looks wonderful and refracts the light beautifully. It's super fast, easy and great for the environment.

Fremantle Bar

A splash of atmospheric colour transforms a bar in Fremantle Australia.

This location in Fremantle Australia is not just a bar...it's a testament to creative vision and the balancing act of old and new. Space Agency Architects were tasked with developing a flexible venue that celebrated novelty while creating opportunities for surprise and delight. The result is a collection of eclectic, atmospheric rooms with their own personality that promises to never be boring.

The small bar displays a very honest approach to its built history and the treatment of its wall finishes. After gutting the space, the walls were finished with a minimal approach that balances the charm of its past life with a new layer of history. For instance, after removing the previous tiles the rough texture of the wall was simply painted over with Bauwerk limewash paint, allowing everybody to get a sense of the past.

The atmospheric colour palette was created together with Dimity Walker from Space Agency Architects and Bauwerk Colour.

Holiday House

This holiday house, created by the owners of Bauwerk, captures the relaxed atmosphere of holiday warmth, nature, and sun-kissed days.

That holiday feeling of warmth, nature and sun kissed days in a relaxed atmosphere was captured in this holiday house designed and built by the owners of Bauwerk Colour on the west coast of Australia.

In achieving this atmosphere a pure lime render was selected as the base for the limewash colours of Bauwerk Colour. The render was finished with a float, then smoothed over with a stainless steel trowel before setting. The surface is soft to the touch and has enough life to show it’s a natural material. This is an ideal surface for limewash paints. The paint is absorbed into the wall and permanently bonds by filling up the surface layer with millions of tiny micro-crystals. Those crystals refract sunlight and scatter the light, giving the soft glow of the paint that makes Bauwerk Colour lime wash such a unique finish.

Aesop believes in well-considered design–for their products and their stores.

Aesop, the cult favourite skincare brand, believes that well-considered design improves our lives. Whilst they take this approach with their products and their minimalist brown packaging, this also extends to a unique approach to shop design. When creating new locations, they utilise the existing features to enhance, rather than alter, for more harmonious spaces. It also results in a wide portfolio of stunning places with unique characteristics. 

Bauwerk Colour natural limewash paints have been utilised in a number of Aesop's unique store designs. The Castle Towers store in Sydney uses the burnt orange tones of the terracotta tiles and the 'Moorland' limewashed walls to reference the red tiled roofs popular in suburbia mid-century. Whilst the Claremont Perth store uses 'Medlar' to complement the unique geometric plywood sculpture. In both locations, the limewash has been applied by simply brushing in a loose random way, that subtly reinforces the natural origins of their products and their inherent beauty to their customers. The light-refracting properties of limewash make the walls glow and take on an almost mystical appearance.

Lynda Gardener Whites

Lynda Gardener blends old and new with layers of rustic and modern details on a backdrop of Bleached White limewash.

Whilst we are colour lovers, even we know sometimes the absence of colour can be the most powerful layer in the right space...especially when in the skilled hands of decorator and stylist, Lynda Gardener. She's known for her blend of old and new–created with layers of rustic, antique and modern details. To balance all of the materials, Bleached White limewash paint becomes a quiet background that adds to the layers while remaining quiet.  

“Rooms are balanced through a mix of textures and tones – wood, metals, textiles, plush velvets and linens. It is really a mix of traditional styling with some fun elements,” Gardener said about the Bower Hotel, a project she worked on with founder Tahlia Lowry. The concept and design of the hotel is to create a luxury holiday experience that balances sophistication and a relaxed beach environment. Sustainability is at the heart of the project...it's hard not to acknowledge the importance of nature when you're surrounded by the natural beauty of Byron Bay and its iconic beaches and rainforests. One of The Bower's signature style benchmarks is incorporating as many sustainable, recycled products as possible, so the use of Bauwerk's limewash paint fits the bill both aesthetically and environmentally. 

This light and airy treatment was also used in Gardener's own rental location, 'Room + Board Daylesford' in Victoria, Australia. "Imagine a mini warehouse space that is part glass house and part conservatory", says Gardner. "The interior features beautiful plants and trees together with curated pieces, furniture and art, all sourced individually from personal collections and sustainable suppliers."
