How to apply limewash paint on aerated concrete

In principle, it is possible to paint all absorbent materials with limewash, including highly absorbent surfaces like Ytong, Gabeston, and lightweight aerated concrete. However, with such surfaces, the absorbency must be reduced beforehand to ensure proper adhesion of the paint. Since direct application on Ytong is rather rare, we don’t have specific experience to share. However, we recommend the following approach:

  • Carry out all necessary surface repairs, using mineral materials (no acrylic filler or similar)
  • Remove dust from the surface
  • Spray on water-based primer (possibly diluted) until the absorbency of the surface is reduced to such an extent that the paint can still penetrate the substrate, but can still be applied easily. For guidance, you can watch our video demonstrating how to apply limewash paint on render. A similar approach should work for highly absorbent surfaces like Ytong or aerated concrete.

Additional Tips

The amount of paint used for the first two coats may be a little higher, depending on how much absorbency you allow the Ytong / lightweight aerated concrete to retain. The pore structure also absorbs a little more paint.

If you want to repaint the wall later, or perhaps choose a different color, this is easy and can be done without any further preparation. The diffusion openness is still fully maintained.

The best thing is that you have a highly diffusion-open system that fully benefits your indoor climate. In addition, a direct coat of lime paint on Ytong is very economical, and many other intermediate steps can be omitted.
