To improve durability and simplify application over sealed or previously painted interior walls, we have developed BAUWERK Prep Coat . Acting as an absorbent layer, Prep Coat facilitates limewash adhesion and can be applied easily by brush, roller, or sprayer. Like all surfaces subject to wear and tear, over time your limewashed walls may require maintenance. To maintain your walls, we recommend simply applying a light refresher coat of limewash. It is quick, easy and makes your walls more beautiful and durable with every layer.

The most durable surface materials for limewash paints is a moderately absorbing render.

The render will allow the limewash to penetrate well below the surface where the paint can form millions of micro crystals. This process is also known as fossilisation whereby the lime wash reverts back to its original form of calcium carbonate (lime stone). It does so by the simple action of re-absorbing athmospheric CO2.

Renders can be cement based (those are the most hard wearing surfaces) or lime / clay based. But also natural stones can be the basis for a hard wearing lime wash finish, particularly lime stone.

Modern factory blended renders can also be purchased as thin coat renders. Those contain special additives that allow them to bond to a variety of surfaces, and are applied in thicknesses of only 3-5mm. That is very useful when you want to re-surface an older existing render or want to tie in a drywall construction with an existing masonry wall.
